Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola hits out at Vincent Kompany after latest injury

Share:

Pep Guardiola has hit out at Vincent Kompany after the centre-back picked up yet another injury in the win over Newcastle on Wednesday night.

The Manchester City star has a long history of calf issues and Kompany seems to have re-aggravated the injury again.

Guardiola has consistently had to do without his best defender and had looked to buy a centre-back he could rely on.

That search hit a road block just before kick-off at St James’ Park when Liverpool confirmed they had reached an agreement with Southampton to sign Virgil van Dijk.

Guardiola was clearly frustrated on the sidelines when Kyle Walker jogged over to tell him Kompany was feeling an issue in his calf.

‘I don’t know,’ Guardiola said after the 1-0 Newcastle win when asked about the extent of Kompany’s injury.

‘I don’t know what is going to happen. Unfortunately he is injured again like the last three years.

‘We are going to see how long it will be before he is ready.’

Goal claim the Kompany injury has inspired a renewed effort from Guardiola to buy a centre-back in January.

The winter transfer window opens in less than a week and City need a defender with Kompany joining John Stones in the treatment room.

Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez, West Brom’s Jonny Evans and AC Milan’s Leonardo Bonucci are all on City’s radar.

City were not prepared to met Southampton’s asking price for Van Dijk and were only informed of the £75million price tag on Wednesday afternoon after Liverpool had submitted their bid.
